I am a California resident.

Situation:

Two fifteen year old minors were caught shoplifting at a local COSTCO warehouse store. the police were notified, names were given, identification, etc. there was an in-store detective and what seemed to be a manager. it was a first offense and the kids were never arrested before and have no previous record. merchandise value is an estimated $132.00 and does not exceed $400.00.

Questions:
-what are the possible charges for these two minors?
-how does pre-meditation change the circumstances?
-how does accusation of previous shoplifting affect the circumstances, ie. if it was not their first time. will they actually go about trying to charge them for previous shoplifting?
-how far in depth does investigation go?
- such a mark on their records will prove devastating when applying to colleges next year, is there a possibility to get it expunged from their records by the time they apply for college? if so, how does one go about doing this?
- will it be likely that the store detective will appear in court when the two minors do? if so, will the parents of the minor be showed the surveillance tapes, pictures, etc. will there be an actual opportunity for him/her to testify against the minors?
-how is the situation handled in the court? being that it is their first and most likely only offense, it was told that they may only have to speak to a detective and work out a probation.
-is it possible that there will be a suggestion of kleptomania?
- if it is indeed their first time stealing and it was not pre-meditated, being that there was no previous record and the minors are excellent students in the academic sense, what will their situation look like?
thank you very much for your advice and help in this situation. any more information that you find appropriate outside of the provided questions is very much appreciated.

thank you again for your advice and support

With evidence that you went there with the intent to steal the charges would be burglary, a felony, instead of shoplifting.
