What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA
Question: If and when I get pulled over by an officer of the law, is he obligated to identify himself? Badge number and so on...?
Is there a statute? That's what I'm getting at.
He is generally required to identify himself as a matter of policy, not so much a matter of statute. However, he does not have to get sidetracked by the question. If you ask him his name and ID, he could just say, "Officer John Smith, number 123 ... now, let me see that license and registration, please."
If he does not provide that information it does nothing to mitigate any offense for which you have been charged, it is a separate administrative, personnel matter.
