after my father was in custody probation showed up at our house to do a search, they asked where he was,i told them he was in jail, they still proceeded to do a search, can they do that?

Generally, no ... but depending on the circumstances, it may still be possible. However, if he is in jail, the argument that the probation search was to help keep him on the path to rehabilitation is a little moot as he is now in custody.

I have heard of court decisions on this going both ways.
