question about car search

my husbands car was parked along the side of the road... he was across the street in a feild... a couple of cops showed up and started searching his car they found in his glove box a very small amount of weed and a pipe and are charging him with possesion of these items.

Was this a legal search and can they charge him legally with what they found? since they didnt have promission to search the car ?

As far as they were concerned it was abandoned. Tell you husband to lock the doors next time.
