    What does a "general" release mean?

    Possibly it means that it is unconditional.

    But, of course, you need to ask the person who gave you the general release.
    There are two rules for success:

    (1) Never tell everything you know.

    I wish I could ask, it's not me who was released! My ex was released, but then immediately taken to another county jail to serve another warrant. There wasn't a disposition posted, typically when she is released from jail it says "defendent released from commitment". It only says general release this time.

    never mind.... I got it.

    In this case, it was just to be transported. It was just updated.
