What is the name of your state? ILLINOIS

I was charged with retail theft under $150. I am to appear in court in a month. I had never clashed with the judicial system before today. What is next? What should I be prepared for?

Theft of property not from the person and not exceeding $300 in value is a Class A misdemeanor.

Class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to $2500 fine and/or up to 1 year in jail.

**However since it is your first offense you may end up getting the chance for the following:

SENTENCES OF PROBATION AND CONDITIONAL DISCHARGE

730 ILCS 5/5‑6‑1
.....
(b) The court may impose a sentence of conditional discharge for an offense if the court is of the opinion that neither a sentence of imprisonment nor of periodic imprisonment nor of probation supervision is appropriate.

**You can also expect a civil fine from the store.
