shoplifting – misdemeanor – really much scared – help needed

What is the name of your state? Illinois (IL)

I was charged with Retail theft (shoplifting - misdemeanor) few days back(in IL) an have a court hearing soon.. I need advise on few things:

1. The worth of the product is $ 140. I certainly knew that this is a stupid mistake done by me. I paid bond of $100. I am here on L1B Visa. Will it create any problems?
2. What should I tell in the court?
a. I have to plead guilty to retail Theft and get supervision for around a year and get the case dismissed later. If so, what is the probability of getting this?
b. I have to plead guilty and pay the fine.

3. Do I have to hire an attorney or I myself can proceed?

Please advice.

Um

If this was a standard shoplifting case, I would tell you that you would be getting a fine and probation. Because of your Visa situation and your wanting to get a green card, I am over my head and you are too.
You should seriously be talking to an lawyer, one with immigration experience. There is an immigration forum on this site. You will probably not get much sympathy here, so do not be surprised if some people are mean, but some people with help too.

"In Illinois, a misdemeanor is normally a crime punishable by less than a year in a jail." I got this message from some website.
Will it be strictly followed? All misdemeanor will be put up in jail for some period. Pls advice.
