Please excuse a question from the ignorant, but why do threads get closed?
In theory because OP has received an appropriate answer.
Often because OP locked it because they didn't like the answers they got.

And often when the OP receives and answer they DIDN'T want to hear they will close and delete the thread then come back and start a new one.

It happened twice today :D

So, if the thread gets closed, what happens to all the replies? And, can they all be removed? If so, then how?

as stated, only the originator or the administrator can close a thread.
