Accident and Injury

What is the name of your state?Washington State, A friend of mine that hit a child on a bike and didn't have insurance at the time is bieng sued by the parents Insurance Comany for the Medical bills($7,000),which is not hard to understand. The car she was drivings Title is in her exliving withs partner of seventeen years name and the Registration is in both names. Anyway when they were together she had lent him money from a inheritance to help purchase the house they lived in and in return he promised that she would always have a roof over her and her childrens head and if they were to split which they have he would buy her a trailer or something to live in .Which unforunately she trusted him to keep his word,(nothing in writing) though I am a witness to the fact of this agreement. He did not keep his word but after the acciddent said he would instead cover the hospital expenses of the child. Well it's been over a year since the accident and she just got paperwork in the mail stating they are going after her for the money, she is on SSI and Social Security and needless to say barely can live now. He has a good job is a property owner. Shouldn't he be responsible in some way also since his name is on the title? Could she maybe take him to small claims court to get some kind of settlement out of him since they did live together as a couple for many years and that way she could put the money on the child's medical bills. If they garnish her SSI check the lady couldn't possible live she'll be on the streets.Sorry this is so long, is there any help for someone in this position? Thank you for your time.

SSI payments are exempt from garnishment, so she doesn't have to worry about that.

As for the rest of your post, your friend was breaking the law by driving without at least liability insurance. Any verbal agreements with her ex partner have no bearing on this. The fact that there is another owner to the vehicle may factor in, and she could contact the insurance company to let them know about this other owner. They might be interested since they're not going to get blood (money) from a turnip (your friend).
