accident in walmart parking lot

What is the name of your state? Louisiana
Ok so i was driving in wal-mart's parking lot in laplace. i couldn't have been going more than 5 mph. there was mist on my windshield (it had been raining). the fluorescent light in the parking lot reflected off the mist on my windshield and i couldnt see for a split second. my girlfriend was in the car with me and shouted out so i slammed on my brakes. I had bumped into a girl (15 years old) walking in the street. got out, called an ambulance and all that. the cops came and got all my information. since it was private property they said that they couldnt write me a citation or anything. they said that it was up to the girl's mom (who was with her) whether to sue me for medical costs, etc. does anyone know what happens from here? does a police report get filed on private property? does it go through insurance? please help. im a poor college student and need all the advice i can get.

Contact your insurance company immediately. If you are in an accident in your automobile and fail to notify them according to the policy rules, then they may deny coverage.

Police can file reports on any situation to which they are called.

Once you contact your insurance company, it is just time to wait for them to file a lawsuit. They may file up to a year after the accident. If served with a suit, contact your insurance immediately.

It will end up being, your ins will pay the girl. Then you will have a fault accident in your record. Then your rate will go up. Not to worry too much. That's why you have insurance.

Its like a regular accident agaist another car.

BUT the scary part though, if the settlement exceeds what your insurance covers. And MANY times, it does! IE: Cost of girls hospital bills etc = $100000, but your ins covers only $15000. You probably WILL be sued for the other $85000. And can end up costing you a fortune, by means of wage garnishment, etc.

Was the girl in a crosswalk? If not, you MAY not be found at fault, but it was a parking lot and not the street, so jaywalking may not be relevent. Just report it to your insurance company and let them handle it. Hopefully she was not badly hurt either way.
