Accidental hit and Run

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? WA

ok im freaking out right now.

i merged onto I5 after my son and daughters doctor apts. got over one lane infront of this green car, my friend following me got behind the car..and then i went to get over one more time and i checked my mirrors, then looked over my shoulder i glanced back infront and the suv infront of me had just stoped no warning. so i slammed on my brakes. i didnt feel an impact, ONLY THE SLAMMING OF THE BREAK I SWEAR TO GOD... and i kept looking at the guy and he made no indication that i hit him.so i waited a while and got over to the left to the carpool lane and left. thinking i had just BARELY stoped in time. that was at 450pm-ish, I didnt realize till (8pm) when i got back to my friends house that well my hoods dented and pushed back. its nothing major... just slight. but well.... i unintentionally did a hit and run and now im FREAKING OUT...

I swear i wasnt driving wrecklessly hell i was only going about 10-15mph, cause it was rush hour. and i only glanced over my shoudler to check my blind spot for a split second. hell i was doing the SAFE THING when it happened.

ive debated calling the high way patrol in the morning and saying "hey look, this happened, and i dont know who it was, dont even know the make or model of the SUV, just that it was black, i had no idea i hit them, the guy didnt even glance at me, i didnt see that i hit him, or feel it, but im scared. both ways.

1. i dont know what will happen if i do that..

2. i dont know what will happen if I DONT do that...

because well if they got my plates... then im REALLY IN TROUBLE arent I? even though i hoenst to god had no idea i hit them. my friend didnt even see or hear it, she said she saw me slam on teh break and turn cause i went into the other lane a bit. but that she didnt see me hit the guy either....

if i didnt feel it.. did they? i need some advice. i know this is lengthy i have a perfect driving record though. no tickets, no accidents... NOTHING. this is my first violation and it was completely innocent

Do the right thing. Call the police, hopefully the person you hit called them and they can find him. Let your insurance take care of their damages and injuries if any. You may get a ticket, or you may not, not the end of the world either way. What is your karma worth to you?

Well ya its not the end of the world, but to pay a huge fine right now, would be horrible.

i have a husband out to sea, bills im already trying to pay off, and have to travel to seattle regularly for my sons cardiology appointments. (ferries arent cheap)... we arent the wealthiest people. i already know filing a claim to get the hood fixed woudl be worthless seeing as how the deductable is over 1000.

but yah i would feel bad not reporting it.

i takled to my aunt who works at the local court house whos gunna ask one of the attornys what i should do.

as far as karma i have a hard tiem believing in that.. my husband and i have had a total of 5000 stolen from us on 3 seperate occassions... 1, was an overseas thing will never get back 1500 from an old friend who we won in court and still havent seen the money after 5 yrs, and another from a friend who wripped us off.

weve been hit by an un-insured motorist who got off scott free because the cops said well he said he had insurance even though his insurance expired the day before and his new insurance didnt start tillt he day after the dumbass hit us...

our son was born with multiple CHD's and i have a preemie daughter...

yah... our lives have been **** on.. and we are honest good hard working people.. so karma??? yah when will it ever be on our side? seeing as how i was doing the right thing by checking my blind spot.. gah ok i went on a rant. i feel so much better..

i seriously doubt i WONT report this.. i know ill end up at least notifying my insurance that this DID HAPPEN just so they know something might come up... but.. i dunno i guess ills ee what teh attorny says.. eitehr way... i feel horrible.. i feel screwed.

After all the bad luck you've had, I'm surprised you didn't make sure you had better coverage. You shouldn't have a deductible so high you can't afford to pay it, that defeats the purpose of having full coverage in the first place. If your husband is military, you can get USAA which is (in my admittedly biased opinion) the best insurance company in the world. I bet it will still cost more then 1000 to fix your damage though, so it will be worth filing the claim.

You were trying to merge over too quickly, you can't only look behind you have to look in front too, you weren't being careful enough. You made a mistake, it happens. Of course, it was still daylight when this happened, if you didn't notice the damage to either car, it's because you were still in a huge hurry, or just not thinking. I'm not trying to chastize you, just giving you a reality check. People are human, they screw up, that's why we have insurance. But I hope in the future you will slow down and use more care when merging.

On the practical side, I think you will drastically REDUCE your chances of getting a ticket if you come forward today, voluntarily. If they have to track you down, you'll DEFINITELY get slammed with a few.
