Airbag deployment without collision

What is the name of your state? I live in NC. In 1998 I bought a 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT club cab with 12000 miles and all the options except 4 wheel drive. Since then I have put 110,000 highway miles on the truck. I have really taken extremely good care of the truck but mechanically and cosmetically. Today I was going to work driving in a line of traffic on interstate and all of a sudden the air bags went off without any collision.
I know the vechile is out of warranty but this could have caused a serious accident, and is quite an expensive repair. Is this something a consumer should have to bear with driving and older truck? Is there anything I can do?

Non-accident airbag deployment in your model vehicle were subject to a dealer recall:
1997 Dodge Dakota NHTSA Recall ID Number: 97V080000
Recall Date: MAY 16, 1997
Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE
Potential Units Affected: 125000
Summary: THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT DESIGN ALLOWS THE POTENTIAL FOR AN INADVERTENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT UPON VEHICLE IGNITION SHUT DOWN.
Consequence: UNEXPECTED AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CAN RESULT IN OCCUPANT INJURY.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AIR BAG ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED MODULE.
Notes: CHRYSLER CORPORATION,

Did you have them replaced?

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport!

The recall is before I purchased the truck. My airbag deployment was while I was in a line of traffic on interstate traveling at 70 miles an hour. I had read about this recall but the conditions of deployment were different.

I don't know. I bought the truck from a Dodge Dealer. It was supposed to have been a truck that the factory had used and the dealer purchased it from the factory. It was in excellent shape when I bought it and is still in excellent shape other than the airbags have deployed. I didn't know anything about the recall untill I looked it up yesterday.

1. Find out if the recall was performed.
2. If it wasn't, ask the dealer what they can do to help.
3. If it was performed, ask the dealer why this could have happened.

I went to the dealer this morning for them to inspect the truck. They checked the vin # and said the recall had not applied to my truck. They had no explanation on how or why it happened but offered to fix it for $2554.00 plus tax.

Well, it sounds like you're stuck paying to have it fixed since there's no explanation for why it happened. Your only other option is investing money in an expert to investigate why it happened and try and prove negligence on the part of the auto manufacturer.

Just an update to let know what's been happening. Ater getting no where with two different dealers I called cutomer service at the factory. I called at 11 AM on Wed talked to two different reps. They said they would have to send an investigator to look at it. At ten that night I got a call from a factory engineer. He met me at 11 on Thur at a dealer in the town I work. He said he couldn't tell me a thing and he would send his rep;ort to the factory that night. On the following Monday I got a call from the factory saying they would fix my truck. I've since had the new bags installed but now they can't get the computer to clear the air bag error.

congrats on getting it fixed. If I were you, I'd take your truck back to the local dealer and get them to run a "diagnostic" on your air bag system, and that will either clear the code or alert you to other damages. Should cost ballpark of $150-$200 to do this assuming there are no problems.

You could try to get Chrysler to pay for this, but you have already "won" by getting the bags replaced and this is a small price for peace of mind.
