What is the name of your state? Texas
Recently my father got into an accident, he rear ended a stopped car on the highway that had to stop because a truck lost its load. He hit the car going approximately 40 mph while wearing a seat belt, and the airbag did not deploy. He received a fractured sternum from possibly hitting the steering wheel during the accident. My question is could he sue the Auto manufacturer for defective airbags, and what type of compensation could he receive.

If the vehicle was under warranty he might be able to win a lawsuit otherwise he is out of luck
Wrong. Federal law requires auto manufacturers to warrantee the SRS for the life of the vehicle. That has absolutely nothing to do with whether the SRS system deploys in an auto accident or not.
