alter medical records

a friend suffered a stroke and is in the hospital now. We saw the hand-written notes and medical records indicating certain instructions (possible evidence of malpractice), but when we requested the records from the hospital, they produced a typed version with different notes and changed the instruction. Is there anything the police can do at this point i.e., have a warrant issued and take the records. or should I wait until the holiday is over to retain a lawyer for a restraing order or court order for the records?
please advise, this is urgent.
thanks

Re: Alter medical records.

I am not a lawyer, but I am a nurse. And I know that it is illegal for someone other than the patient or legal guardian to even see a patients medical records, let alone get a copy of the records. It is a violation of a patient rights of confidentiality. Are you your friend's legal guardian? I know from experience, that medical records do some times get altered, so you if you really suspect this, then you need to get the patient, or a legal guardian to get a lawyer. Maybe someone on this forum who knows more about the law than I do, would like to please advise you about what to do. If the person is elderly, you could get in touch with the Onsbusman who protect the elderly's rights. Hope this helps a little.
