I was insured by a well-known company who closed up shop without notifying me. When I visited another branch to find out what had happened, I was told I could renew my auto insurance at a higher rate since I had allowed my old policy to lapse. I explained I had done no such thing, but they didn't care and I was forced to renew at the higher rate. Shortly thereafter I switched to another well-known carrier with lower rates. Right after that I was contacted by the Maryland MVA who informed me I owed a considerable fine for the lapse of insurance. There was no exact amount listed on the notice, so I had to do the math myself and apparently came up with an incorrect sum, for after I mailed off my check I received a second notice stating I still owed another $200+. I never received a receipt, but as nothing more came from the MVA I thought everything was then covered and taken care of.
Low and behold, over a year later when it's time to renew my tags, I'm told I owe $763.00 for a fine dating back to 1998--the same insurance violation! I explained I had already paid this with two checks, but the MVA says they never received anything from me! I know this is a lie because of the notice I'd received stating I had not paid enough with the first check sent. The checks were written on a business account and the bank does not return them to me. Instead, I must pay a fee for every check they research for me and without receipts from the MVA I have no record of the exact amount or the dates they were written. The MVA has decided to revoke my registration effective back to February of '98, and I'm going broke paying cab fare to and from work as well as these darned bank fees. Should I simply keep handing cash over to my bank or is there another recourse? At the moment, we have not found any of our bank statements dating back that far to help us and I know I threw the "insufficient payment" notice from the MVA away... Help! This is affecting my job as well as my personal life...
