Auto insurance not required?

What is the name of your state? PA

My family has one car, belongs to my father. He has auto insurance. I don't have auto insurance because I don't need to drive (my boyfriend does). If I want to drive my father's car or my boyfriend's car. Do I need to get auto insurance myself? I asked Allstate and they said since I am an occasional driver I don't need to get insurance. I know that insurance follows the car. What are the disadvantages of not buying insurance vs buying? Thanks.
