Last Saturday, I was involved in an accident. It's a hit and run. I copied down the truck's plate number (ST17939), however, the police officer told me it's not the plate number of the truck, it's the trailer's number. (ST means semi-trailer). He also added that numerous people made the same mistake. Seemingly the police couldn't do anything for me. My insurance policy doesn't cover the property damange in this case. The question is: can't the police tra ck the trailer and catch the truck driver? Do I need a lawyer? Thanks.
