Car Accident with Careless Driving Ticket

What is the name of your state? New Jersey


I got into a car accident recently. I had a stop sign, i was stopped for a while and went when it was clear and was hit by another car. I received a ticket for careless driving since according to law even though i was hit, i had the stop sign and so it is by law- my fault. This is my 1st accident/ticket. SHould i get a lawayer? or be able to go to court on my own and knock this down to a lower offense with no points? I'm very confused and would appreciate some advice.

im confused, how were you hit if you stopped and only went when it was clear? it must not have been clear, right? or did he have a stop sign too?

You can certainly go to court to try to have the charges reduced. They are pretty willing to drop the points in exchange for a higher fine in NJ. It won't make you any less responsible for the accident, but your insurance will take care of that.
