What is the name of your state? California.
If I am given a car, and put it in my name alone, with my own personal insurance, could someone go after the "gifter" in the event of an accident for which I am responsible? Thank-you...

If the vehicle title is ENTIRELY and SOLELY in your name, no.
Otherwise, a damaged party can go after anyone whose name is on the title as 'owner'.
