confused

i worked on new years eve at a catering hall, parked my car in the back lot, with the job done at 3:30am I came out to find my car had been side swiped on both sides. i called my insurance company tues. and they said i have to file a police report which i have to get at the station since i left the scene of where the damage was done. this has never happened to me. how detailed does the police report get? the insurance company thinks its vandalism because both sides were damaged, and does it look bad because i didn't call till after new years day being the office was closed? any input will help, even same expeirences. thanks!
