I live in NY. A friends parked car was struck by vehicle whose driver fled the scene. The vehicle was subsequently reported stolen. The insurance company has declined to cover the damages because the vehicle was stolen. I would appreciate any thoughts regarding any recourse my friend might have.
Thanks so much.

I was driving and got into a car accident, the other car ran into me and fled. when the police got there, they searched the area and found the car that hit me (no one was in the car). The car ended up being stolen, so I had to use my insurance, pay my 500.00 deductible to have my car fixed.

i was looking into changing insurance companies and all the companies that i called wanted to charge me close to 3x's more than my insurance because of this accident, which was not my fault. good luck to your friend.

You stole this persons thread, but I will respond to your statement.

Your situation is different than the original posters. Their car was parked and unoccupied at the time of the accident. If a police report was taken, and the vehicle was indeed stolen, then it would be considered a non chargable accident and would not change their rates.

You were driving when hit by a stolen vehicle, and although you state that it was their fault, the insurance companies are more than likely assigning some blame to you as well. This would make your rates go up.

PauliD, your friend will need to recover the cost of damages through their own policy. The insurance on the stolen vehicle will not apply.
