dog bite

My 10 year old son was bitten by a rottweiller that is usually fenced in a company's yard. The man who owns theses dogs(there are three), had one on a leash(or using a belt) to control him while walking. Two of the dogs were loose. These are dogs the man uses for security reasons. After the dog bit my son(who was with a friend of his), the man left the premises. I was only about 1/2 block away, we can see the building from our yard due to it being an open field. The man did not let me know that his dog had bitten my son. When I got in touch with the man, he informed me that the dogs shots were up to date. We have since found out that the dogs have not had shots since 1999. We took my son to the emergency room, but they did not clean the wound(open puncture) or ask about a tetnus(sp) shot. We called the sheriff who came out and took a report. I have filed charges against the man. His wife has called and agreed to pay all bills, pay for my son's clothes that were ripped and give him a "little extra" for his Easter basket. Can you tell me what else I might need to do and do we have any other options concerning this matter

First and formost, consider yourself lucky that your son still has a face. (I am not being dramatic, I have worked with large breeds for protection training and I know what kind of damage they can do). Rottweillers are one of the large breeds that tend to clamp down and lock their jaws when they bite. They shake and tear their prey. Small dogs bite just as often they just don't do as much damage. I live in Kentucky. Here, if the dog has a history of being a biter, you can insist that he be put to sleep. You can check with your local law inforcement to see if any complaints have been filed in the past on the dog that bit your son. Of course the owner must pay for any medical treatement needed and the dog will have to be observed for rabies. The sad part of this is, it is not the dogs fault, but a very negligent owner. Rotts are a wonderful and loyal breed, but they only have instinct and what they are taught. If we don't teach them, they only have instinct.
