| ...Hit a bicycle. Help, thx for advices. What is the name of your state? Minnesota
This is a horrible accident...It just happened 2 hours ago.
I got a citation for "Fail to obey stop sign". p.s. The citation did not "check" any "accident" involve. (forgot to check?)
It occured at 9:52 PM, i was driving as usual as I approach a 4-way stop sign, i downshift to 2nd gear about to make a right turn. (Only one block away from home). The streets were very dark. I made a mistake, i didn't stopped completely, i took off around 10-15 mph.
All the sudden a person was on my wind shield. The windshield were shattered. He dropped on the floor. I quickly get out to check if he's ok.
Apparently, he was riding a bicycle, then all of a sudden a bunch of people came out, (teenagers and some other from a nearby gas station). Pointing at me...for not stopping. Yes it was my fault. Mins later, alot of the polices arrive, along with medical staff? i was kind of stoned and scared. Fortunately, the man was ok and the staffs said he's ok and convince him to walks home. (He walk home with the staffs. He claim his leg was hurt, fracture bones?)
I think he was crossing the sidewalk during the accident
I am willing to let my insurance pay for everything that's necessary to help. Here's what worrys me. The man was mad and ....i don't want to say anything bad about him, but i know he's the kind of person that wants to sue me for money...BIG TIME.
I forgot to ask the police if there's any police report?? Police report?
After awhile i felt like it was partially my fault 80% mine, 20 his. Here's is why. As i check the minnesota law.
Subd. 6. Bicycle equipment. (a) No person shall
operate a bicycle at nighttime unless the bicycle or its
operator is equipped with a lamp which shall emit a white light
visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and
with a red reflector of a type approved by the Department of
Public Safety which is visible from all distances from 100 feet
to 600 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful lower
beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle. No person may operate a
bicycle at any time when there is not sufficient light to render
persons and vehicles on the highway clearly discernible at a
distance of 500 feet ahead unless the bicycle or its operator is
equipped with reflective surfaces that shall be visible during
the hours of darkness from 600 feet when viewed in front of
lawful lower beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle.
---he does not have lamp light. not sure about reflectors.
Couple questions that i couldn't find on internet. And would like some opinions or help?
1.) Do I have to appear in court if he did sue me.
2.) How much will my insurance increase, how should i tell them? Right now it's 480 half year. I recently changed under my father insurance, secondary. (it was a fancy sport car)
At the end, i feel sry for everything. Let's hope the man is really ok. And i will be much more careful when i am driving in the dark.
Thankx for your concern and advises
