California. In this day and age, what is a REASONABLE amount of auto insurance coverage that one should have? I figured that 100K/300K for bodily injury was sufficient; however, reading some postings I've seen it recommended to have one million dollars coverage.

Hello BigStewMan

The amounts you mentioned should be fine for the average bear. However, when it comes to insurance, the saying "More Is Better" may apply.

Basically, the amount of coverage you carry personally, is subjective. It all depends upon what assets you have, other insurances you carry, the other limits of the auto policy, who is at fault and the severity of the potential accident.

The direct answer to your question only you can decide upon. Discuss this with your insurance agent. If you have assets to cover above and beyond auto insurance, you may want to inquire about an "Umbrella Policy."

Be advised that not all insurance carriers offer this type of policy. However, insurance companys offer coverages well beyond those normally offered but you have to ASK.

In todays world of law suites for everything and everything, to best cover yourself, know your personal needs and buy all the insurance you need and can afford.
