How strong is my case if I go ahead with LAWSUIT???

What is the name of your state? California

I had car accident last Christmas. Here is the case: My friend gave me a ride back home from airport. I was too tired after the long flight so I didn't notice he had some alcohol before he came to the airport. I was sleeping at the back seat. The next thing I remembered was being carried by pedestrian out of the car then I realized the car hitted the tree and the car was totaled. My friend was arrested for DUI.
I had bruises all over my face and hurt my shoulders and my back. I didn't break any bones nor internal injury. I hired a lawyer and continued with the therapy. The insurance company offers $4000 for the settlement. It can't even cover my medical bills. So my lawyer suggests me to file the lawsuit.

My lawyer said I can possibly get $20,000.00 if I file lawsuit. However can it covers the lawsuit expenses or some of the expenses needs to be taken out from my own pocket?
Can someone tell me the pros and cons of filing the lawsuit????

Thank you very muchWhat is the name of your state?

How much coverage did your friend have for bodily injury? How much coverage did your friend have for medical payments? How much coverage do YOU have on your automobile insurance policy for medical payments? I'm guessing that you also live in CA.
