| | | | I made a little mistake and I'm still suffering!! What is the name of your state? Arizona
Back in 1999 I bought a car and paid cash for it on a Saturday night just from an individual selling in the paper. It was in the shop getting work done on it until the next Saturday night. I hadn't put insurance on it or registered it because I had an agreement to return it if it wasn't going to run right. I took it home Saturday night and I had enough cash left for registration and a full year of insurance that I was going to take care of the upcoming Monday. I needed to drive the car one time the day before I got it registered and insured. That one time I ended up in an accident. I didn't have any existing tickets or any negative marks on my record. I was ticketed for not having insurance, or registration and failure to yield. I was stopped at a 2 way stop and a driver breaking the speed limit T-boned me before I made it through the stop (he had no stop sign).
I was sued by his insurance company for almost $12,000. I didn't recieve notice for court so I lost by default and they took away my license. I got one notice from his insurance company that I had to pay or my license would not be returned. I happened to lose the number to his insurance company and have not heard anything back years later. My license was suspended in August of 2003.
I haven't had the time, energy, or more importantly the money to figure out what to do from here. My friend that works at the Motor Vehicle Dept says I have to pay everyhting before I get my license. I am desperate and don't know what to do!!! Any advice from anyone would be helpful. |

| | | Easy, pay the money or dont get your license back.
If you have no assets to sell or borrow against to pay the debt your only option may be to file bankruptcy. |

| | | | Sorry, I meant that my license was suspended in August of 2000 and has been suspended since. If I were to pay the $12,000 how would I find out where I would need to pay it? What could I expect the monthly payments to be? Would there be a statute of limitations on this? If I made monthly payments would my license be returned before it is all paid. I have recieved no notices or anything since August of 2000 and I don't plan on hunting down someone that is wanting money from me. I have paid off the tickets (the only tickets I have ever gotten) and it's not like I was trying to defy the law when I drove the car without insurance and registration. It was a Sunday and the MVD and Insurance company were not open. I had over $3000 in my pocket during the accident that I intended to use the next day to take care of it. I have been treated like a criminal the entire time by anyone I have asked for legal advice. Frankly when someone who gets continued DUI's and other tickets is allowed to drive in a matter of a year or two and I have been stuck for almost 3 years at this point and no hope in sight it really kind of pisses me off!!! |

Maybe the only people we know who carry that much cash money around on a sunday are DRUG DEALERS.
See how bizzare your story is? |

| | | | I forgot that it is not humanly feasible that someone that bought a used car from an individual so recently, might have had cash on hand. Knowing that if you buy a used car and are able to pay cash up front, as opposed to having a seller being paranoid about the possibility of a check bouncing, or having to deal with small monthly payments that generally the person selling is willing to take significantly less for the car. Not only that but knowing that the car could probably use new tires and other minor details and not wanting to deal with following a paper trail for months to come to balance my check book for all the little things the car might need, I found it easier to take out one lump sum of cash to deal with everything. So that makes me a drug dealer?!! Is there anyone on this website that is actually giving real advice? Is there someone that knows anything about the legal profession that can be of any help? Enough of the cynical fools already. I have questions that I am looking for answers for and if you don't have them don't bother saying anything!! Your wasting my time!!! |

| | | | Sorry for all the snide answers you are getting.. My daughter went through the same thing..only she didn't have to pay quite as much..but she did have to pay to get her liscense back. Whomever wrote to you about filing bankruptcy might have a point. Maybe you should check into it. I hope a lawyer will answer this for you..otherwise..what is the point of this? God bless your day. | |
