| Injured at work I was working at a summer camp in New York state this summer and I injured my knee while walking down a very steep hill on camp grounds. I went to the infirmary and they basically wrapped my knee in an ace bandage and gave me two asprin and told me I would be fine. My knee continued to hurt very badly and my husband was very concerned so he talked to one of the camp administrators. The administrator suggested that I go to the hospital. I do not have health insurance and my husband asked the administrator what to do about the bill. He was told not to claim it as a worker's comp injury but that the camp would take care of the bill. I was reluctant to go since the nearest hospital was an hour away and I was worried about the bill. So I personally asked this same administrator what to do about the bill. He told me the same thing; don't claim it as workman's comp, but to have the bill sent there and the camp would take care of it. So I went to the hospital and they x-rayed my knee but didn't see any bone damage so they said it must have been a badly torn or strained ligament or something in my knee. They prescribed Vicodin, gave me a huge immobilizer for my knee, crutches, and told me to stay off of it for 4 days. Anyhow, about a week or so later, my husband and I quit the camp due to unrelated circumstances. We received a bill for the hospital a few days before we were leaving. I took the bill to the administrator and he rudely told me that they were not responsible for paying for it and that I couldn't claim workman's comp anyway since we were being 10-99'd because we were hired as "outside contractors". I feel that this is wrong because he agreed to pay the bill to both myself and my husband. He told us to "discuss it with the insurance company" and gave us the number and name. We have since found out from a lawyer friend that if the camp's insurance has something called Med-Pay they are responsible for any bills under $1,000. So we called the insurance company of the camp and the man refused to tell us any information even though the camp administrator had told us to call him. I feel that the camp was negligent to begin with since their "infirmary" was unable to correctly diagnose a possibly serious injury and did not even provide crutches or suggest to me that I go to the hospital to have it x-rayed. The administrator assured me repeatedly that the camp would pay the bill. I think they should pay it and so far I have been unable to get them to do so. Any advice is greatly appreciated. |
