Injury accident

What is the name of your state? Michigan.

I was in an accident where I rear ended vehicle1. Then vehicle1 ended up veering into oncoming traffic hitting vehicle2. The passenger in vehicle2 is still in the hospital, everyone else is OK. My truck was impounded until further investigation. I have been speaking with the police officer who was on the scene and he simply tells me that its normal that my truck is still impounded, under some law. He also states that the injured lady is still in the hospital. He tells me nothing more because he says he cannot. I don't have much liability insurance thru my car insurance, only $25k. It was a complete accident. It happened on my way to work at 8AM, I wasn't paying attention. The officer states with even with a lawyer no information can be released to him/her. I am worried that I/my family will be sued for everything, which isn't much. I also would love to get my truck back. Any advice?

How much coverage do you have? Generally, your policy will show 3 numbers for liability (2 for bodily injury and 1 for property damage). If you only have $25000 per person, expect to be sued for the balance. Who do you think should pay this person's medical bills that your inattention caused, since you didn't purchase enough insurance?

Michigan is a no fault insurance state. The insurance company of the injured party should cover the hospital bills and will contact your insurance for reimbursement. You will be on the hook for anything over the policy limits, just like with regular auto insurance. I would be more worried about the police impound of the vehicle. If there are any mechanical defects that could have been present at the time of the accident, you could be charged with a crime. You really need to talk to a local attorney.

I was told that when anyone is in an accident in the state of Michigan, their own car insurance has to cover all medical bills, it just sucks all the way around.
