Insurance Company problems

What is the name of your state? New Mexico

I was involved in an auto accident about two weeks ago where I was at fault. At the time of the accident, there was no apparent damage to the vehicle, but my insurance company was contacted at the time anyway. At that point, the representative for the company stated that I had insurance, and a claim number was issued. Since then, both I and the woman who owns the other vehicle have been contacted, and been informed that I did not have insurance at the time of the accident. There has been no police report filed about the accident, and there was never a police officer at the scene of the accident. Since then the other vehicle's owner has had the vehicle taken into a mechanic, and there is some damage to the vehicle, even though the accident was under 5 MPH. What is my insurance company's financial responsibility, since they did say that I was covered at the time of the ccident? Does this constitute a verbal contract with the company? Also, what is the responsibility of the other driver's insurance, since uninsured motorist insurance is required by NM state law?

Did you have a valid insurance policy on the car or not? A simple yes or no answer please.

Check with your insurance company, if your policy just expired, maybe you were under a grace period. My company gives 15 days of coverage after a policy expires to give time to find another company if that is what you choose to do. If the accident was less than 5 miles per hour, it shouldn't be more than 500 dollars in damage, it might be best to contact the other driver and both insurance companies and foot the bill for the damage out of pocket. but make sure you get insurance before you get behind the wheel again!
