| | | Insurance problems with minor What is the name of your state? MI
My son was irresponsible with his driving and got into an accident within a month of getting his car. So we cancelled his license. His mother lives in Minnesota and has him for 8 weeks over the summer and went to the license bureau and had his license re-instated against my wishes (I am the custodial parent). Lo and behold my insurance company adds my son to my stepson's policy and it is outrageous because of the "conviction". We were told by the license bureau that the only recourse we have is to keep cancelling it whenever she re-instates it. The insurance company says that they will not remove the insurance on him if the address on his license is ours, even though we did not re-instate it and he is not even in the state! Is there any recourse we can take against her or something we can do to not be responsible while he is not even here! |

Then you will not have to pay premium for him but you also may be sued if he gets into an accident in a vehicle that you own. If his mother wants him to drive, then let her pay for a policy for him. But keep your keys away from him, because even if he takes them without your permission, you could still be on the hook. |

We called the insurance company and they basically told us that we had no choice but to insure him if he is licensed and his address on the license is our home address. This really angers me since we would not have re-instated it! I called my ex and told her that she had to send them proof that she is insuring him (she doesn't have any on herself let alone him!) or I would yet again cancell his license. Hopefully she is too far away to make regular runs to our state and have it re-instated! She is in Minnesota and we are in Michigan.
If I write a formal letter to my insurance company do you think that they have to honor my request or can they refuse? |

| | | They can refuse. Some insurance companies require that all household members with licenses be listed on the policy. They have paid too many claims for unlisted drivers, and, may have been sued for not extending coverage to drivers that were excluded. You can, however, change to a company that does not have this practice.

Thanks for your help. | |
