Insurance and Salvage Title Laws

I'm from Michigan and have a 99 Dodge truck that has a salvage title. When I went to get it insured, the Insurance company said they will not insure salvage title vehicles. Can they actually deny me insurance because of the salvage title, even though it was state recertified?

Yes, insurance companies can refuse to insure you. Each company has their own set of underwriting guidelines, which are used to decide who and how they write the policy. Many insurers do not accept cars with re-built titles.

You need to shop around until you find an agent who writes for a carrier that will accept your car.

In my state we also will not insure a salvaged title with full coverage and it mostly stems from the fraud committed in the past with older (as in 3-5 yr old vehicles). Many people were taking the salvaged titles across state lines to get a clean title and then reinsurancing it back in the home state.

Unforunately we all pay for the fraud of others. Eventually everything catches up with each and every one of us. Good luck finding an insurer to help you.
