Judgement against me

YOUR STATE NAME - NJ
I just found out that there is a judgement against me for an auto accident from 2000. My ex and I were separated at the time and the auto was in his name. The insurance and registration was expired which I did not know when he asked me to go pick up the kids from grandmas. I got in accident and received three tickets. One was no insurance, another for no registration and the other for careless driving. I appealed the tickets and the one for no insurance and the one for no registration were removed because the car was not mine. However, the insurance company went after my ex. He said it was my responsibility not hers. I never received any paperwork from the courthouse to appear in court like he did. He showed up to court and because I wasn't there they told him they were going after me. Next thing I know I got a letter stating a judgement was put against me for the full amount.
Anyone know what my legal right is. We are no divorced and this accident happened in 2000, over two years ago. The judgement is for $5K.

NOW you know how expensive it is to be seperated.

You should have gotten a fast divorce.

You caused the accident YOU had no insurance, and Hubby is passing the buck to you....

all because you were not divorced fast enough

If you were divorced he would have to pay it then sue you.

Can't I do the same thing. I mean sue for atleast half the money? Car was in his name, he let the insurance and registration lapse while we were seperated. Judgement is now against me....but if we were still legally married isn't he responsible for half?

You should not have been driving the car in the first place you didnt own it and the insurance would have been your responsibilty to make sure it was valid, before you got in the car.

If you had something in the separation agreement that says hubby was required to pay the insurnce and you are allowed to drive the car, and he didnt then he would be liable for the FULL amount.

He probably said you had no right to drive HIS car.

Separations can be very costly compared to a quickie divorce.
