What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Massachusetts

Speaking theoretically here, what, if any liability does the owner of the car have if a family member (son/daughter/husband/wife) (who is listed as a driver on the insurance) were to get into an accident where there were serious injuries or property damage to the other party going above and beyond what the insurance would cover. Can the car owner be sued, even if he/she was not in the car at the time, but did allow the family member to use the vehicle?? or can just the driver be sued? if so, what is the likelyhood of the car owner being required to pay out damages in a trial..

Is there any advantage to registering all cars to the respective drivers, as opposed to registering them all to the head of the household to save money. (ie- wife, sons and daughters each have cars registered to themselves, as opposed to all cars registered to the head of household, even though this is significantly more expensive)

Thank you.
