mailbox damage

I work for the USPS and was delivering mail when the side mirror on my car hit a mailbox and broke a bracket off. I went to the door and informed the homeowner and offered to have the bracket welded back onto the wrought iron box. He informed me today that he is having a new (identical) box put up and that I will need to pay him the $200+ for the new box. I believe that I should pay for the damage that I caused (i.e. the cost of the broken bracket), but that I should not be expected to purchase a new post, mailbox, nameplate for this 8 year old box . What am I required to pay? THANKS...
