mechanic is billing for work he did just prior to his accident in my car.

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? maryland Am I responsible for paying his bill for his work when he totalled my car in his test drive - he was hit in the rear?

If he performed the work, I don't see how you wouldn't have to pay him for it. You will be compensated by his insurance for the value of your vehicle immediately before the accident. If he had crashed BEFORE performing the work, that would be a different story.
