methods of settlement payment

my 26-yr. old son suffered a brain injury in an auto accident here in tennessee and is here at home with me under my care. a substantial settlement is anticipated. what types of settlement payments is normally offered and will i have the right to choose which would be best for him? i have been told that sometimes insurance companies will try to force a trust fund situation and i just want to know if i would be unreasonable to object. thanks.
