I had an accident and when i reported to my insurance they said my policy had been canceled 2 months ago. I never received any notice that it was being cancelled. Now i recieved a ticket for driving an uninsured vehicle. What is the penalty for this in NJ? Can i fight this? Do I need a lawyer? I am singled mom and need my car to get to work? What can I do?

I am a law school graduate. what I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

They should have sent you a cancellation notice or someting. But, were you aware of the date your policy would stop? I.e. your renew date? If they cancelled prior to the time you were to renew, you bear no responsibility.

At that point, you need to let them know of their bad faith breach and help you fight the ticket and reinstate your insurance.
