No Police Report...I messed up.

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

As several cars suddenly braked in front of me, I slammed my foot down, too - but didn't quite make it. I hit the car in front of me, and that car hit the car in front of it.

Nobody was hurt, and we decided to settle the matter ourselves instead of involving police or insurance companies (this is my first accident & I didn't know any better at the time). The driver in front had no visible damage and didn't even exchange information with us.

The person I hit is now asking that I pay to repair her front bumper (which had no visible damage, like the first car), and pay to replace her back bumper (which was dented with a little paint damage). The estimates she sent me are around $1000 to repair her 2009 Toyota Corolla.

Legally, I'm fairly certain she can't hold me accountable for anything. Morally, I would like to settle this...but I don't want to pay more than I actually should, or more than what insurance would pay!

This is long, sorry... here are my questions:

1. Am I responsible for her front bumper, and 2. Do we (she or I) have any legal rights with no police report or insurance companies involved?

Thanks!

Legally, you are required to pay for all of the damage you caused. Morally, same. Turn it over to your insurance company and they will determine what damage you actually caused and pay for it.
