"No Proof Of Insurance"

What is the name of your state? FL, Pasco County

I just recently bought my 1997 Chevy Cavalier from my brother in law in Nov or so.... and I didn't get it registered yet and didn't have any insurance on it. I wanted to finish hooking it up (engine, exterior, etc.) before spending the money to insure it and re-register it. I took it to work one day just to show it off and on the way home from work my cousin wanted to race me down a long stretch of road that isn't traveled often. I raced him but the roads were a bit slick and when I hit the bend my car spun out and went into the woods.... breaking the windshield and causing the State Trooper to come out. I got my car towed and picked it up the next day but of course I didn't have any insurance and it wasn't registered under my name yet... and the tag was still in my brother's name. I'm not sure if he had insurance on it at the time either... and I doubt he did.
My question is... on the "Notice of Arraignment" that I recieved it states: "[If you]...had valid insurance or proof that you are not the registered owner of the vehicle, you may bring a copy of the owner's registration or an insurance card or binder to the traffic violations bureau, prior to your hearing and pay a $5 dismissal fee and a $16 delinquency fee."
One... I am on probation, this is a civil infraction... does this violate me?
Two... if I proved he was the registered owner of the vehicle at the time of the accident do I just pay the fines and its over? Or does it fall on him?
Please help me out.... deca_club@hotmail.com

Looks like your BROTHER-in-law is going to have some explaining to do.

HIS license might be suspended for allowing you to take the car without having insurance on it.

I hope your brother-in-law is not a violent type, or i would expect him to bust your jaw!

your driving license will most likely be suspended until you provide proof of insurance on the car. You should immediately get the car registered in your name and get it insured. The judge may go easy on you if you come across as somewhat responsible for your actions and that you are now trying to do the right thing.

Dont argue that the car belongs to your bro-in-law. You have had the car for the 8 months, it's yours.

Who in their right mind "hooks up" a Chevy Crapolier and tries to race it? This has got to be one of the strangest things I've ever heard of...

You think that's weird? My old roommate lowered his Chevy Astrovan and put it on hydraulics.
