Owe insurance company big time money but not sure about paying it

What is the name of your state? Virginia
When I was 17 I got into an auto accident, totalling a woman's car (front hood and engine). Claimed it was my fault (and yes it was) and I nor the vehicle was insured. Went to court and judge dismissed the case. 9 or so months down the road, company contacts my mother saying we owe such and such money, mom didn't keep up (and now I'm 20) and they want to take me to court. My thoughts are how can they sue me for something I did when I was 17 (far as I know, I wasn't legally an adult till 18) and was thrown out of court, plus they never once got a hold of me (and yet... I do have insurance with them now). Is this legal of them or must it be my mother who pays since I wasn't an adult at the time or must I still pay? Thanks!

What was the case for that the judge dismissed, and who was the defendant?
