renting to another - accident

My fiance bought a car in 2001 which his mother now drives and took over the payments. Since his name only is on the deed, is he responsible for any accidents his mother has with the car? And after we are married and his mom has an accident can they come after me? I bought a house before the marriage and do not want to lose it. His mother is a responsible driver (no DUI's or drug use or anything like that). Just wondering if he needs to change the title to his mother's name or can he just change the insurance to add her name? He wants to keep the title so he can trade it in himself for the next car. His mom is basically renting it right now from him.

At a minimum, add her as an authorized driver on the insurance, and up the coverage. If she runs over Bill Gates,his lawyers can, and will, come after your husband and his assets, which would include at least a portion of the house.

Could their exposure be limited? In similar threads this was already discussed, and it sounded like anything beyond coverage limits may be subject to who was driving, not whos insurance or car it was.
