What is the name of your state? I have a 17 Yr old stepson who does NOT reside with us although My wife is the "Custodial PARENT". We live in Florida and he does reside with his father in Florida. His father is allowing him to purchase a vehicle with the basic insurance requirements. His father owns no assets and we are concerned about our legal responsibality for his driving. His father has signed the necessary documents for him to get his drivers license. Will we be held responsibile for any damages caused by his driving?

Your stepson cannot purchase a vehicle in his own name until he is 18. The vehicle would have to be registered and insured in his father's name. Since he does not reside with you and you have no control then there should be no liabilily.

However it does not mean that your wife could not be sued. You can sue anyone over anything including hamburgers making you fat. If you are concerned then purchase an umbrella policy over and above your normal insurance. This is good advice for anyone with substantial assets to protect.
