Is one's state of driver's license available for public viewing?

Guy hit me, didn't have insurance, I filed a police report (SR-1) and sent it to sacramento, and stated he was uninsured in big letters.

Been over a month and no reply from them. Called DMV and they said they can't tell me if its suspended or not or anything about it and basically blew me off telling me there's nothing I can do.

I thought it was public record?

What options do I have at the moment? I'm going to try confronting a police officer and asking him, maybe he'll run a check for me..

Seems to be unfair because basically there is no way for me to make sure if it was enforced or not or even if the letter went through.

They also said I could send a diff form requesting his insurance information for 20 dollars, but if they don't have it on file - then tough luck for me.

what are you trying to determine from the DMV?

You are not entitled to know the address of the other driver unless you are an attorney attempting to locate the driver to serve with legal paperwork.

if you just want to know if the other driver's license has been suspended, that isnt public information all alone. I cant just call or write to the DMV to ask if SpawnX's license is suspended.

The way it is supposed to work is that after you submit your SR-1 form, the DMV sends the same form to the other driver. If the other driver fails to respond or responds that he is uninsured, the other driver has his license suspended until proof of insurance is provided.

The other form mentioned by the DMV is for you to find out if the other driver responded to the SR-1 with any insurance information.

you can also sue the other driver in small claims court (damages less than $5000). If you win, you can file the judgment with the DMV. His license will then be suspended until the judgment is paid and the other driver shows proof of insurance.

I am trying to find out < well, making sure> that his license has been suspended for not having insurance.

I want to make sure the suspension gets enforced, but without any sort of confirmation I don't even know if the letter went through to the DMV or not.

I also want to see if the information he submitted is the same as the < FAKE > one he gave me.

I don't want him getting off this by providing false information to the DMV who won't even verify it and not getting a penalty for driving and hitting me uninsured.
