Today my friend came and picked me up for lunch. As he was dropping me off he parked in front of my driveway and I opened the door to get out. The door swung open over my driveway and caught a piece of it, leaving a small nick on the corner of the door. After the "Eww, that sounded ugly," and an apology we both looked at the damage, he shrugged his shoulders and left.
About ten minutes later he told me that his dad (who's a lawyer

) told him he had two choices. 1) Get my insurance information and make a claim with them for the damage I caused or 2) Pay for it himself and be grounded. (Loving father...) Completely shocked by his dad's behavior I hopped online and looked for answers. After finding nothing I decided to hop on here and ask if I have any way of 1) avoiding a mess and 2) not paying. There are a couple things that I'm hoping might give me some type of help. The first would be that we both assessed the damage and found it as no big deal considering the fact that he left my house, maybe "fleeing the scene of the accident." The other would be that he parked illegally in front of my driveway to let me out, so if it weren't for his 'illegal' actions then the door wouldn't have been scratched (it would have swung open in front of my yard causing no harm).
So, would getting a lawyer be worth risking going to court or should I just give up? I live in Ohio, we are both 18 and the car is in his dad's name.
