Serious DMV Issues

What is the name of your state? VA

I was in an abusive relationship and during that time fell into a depression which included me just one day not returning to work. That happened a year ago. During that time, my ex stated he had kept up on the auto insurance and auto payment but didn't. The vehicle and insurance was in my name and I know it was my responsibility but I had no job and just getting out of the bed was difficult.

I have now left the ex and am now trying to pull myself together which includes getting a job because I am now the only provider for me and my children. I contacted DMV who stated that my license is suspended and now needs to be renewed but I will need to request my license to be reinstated and obtain insurance. There is more of a catch...I am getting rid of the vehicle so I deactivated the tags considering I am not driving it but the customer service rep since its been 6 months since my license has been suspended I will probably not be able to drive for another year.

Has anyone ever dealt with this or have any advice as to how I can convince the hearing officer with my hearing request letter to lift the suspension until I recieve a formal hearing which could take months or even a year? I have to go back to work so we can survive or else we will be out on the street.

Find out if you qualify for restricted license (known as "hardship license"). I can't find exact statute if Virginia code at the moment, but here is the statute for a similar scenario:

Search this site further if needed: http://legis.state.va.us/Laws/CodeofVa.htm

Good luck.

Thank you so much for your response. I sent a request for a hearing online today and will look further into the statutes that may apply. I would definitely be willing to do a restricted license just to go from work/home for a period of time.
