SSN, birth date, etc. for interrogatories

What is the name of your state? TN

We have to answer interrogatories related to a car accident lawsuit. My concern is the request for Social Security Number. Along with the requested place of birth and birth date, that information provides everything needed for identity theft. Why would this be required? What would happen if we ignored the request for SSNs?

You cannot ignore this request. Your lawyer should indicate that you feel you do not need to divulge this information. Of course, if the court orders you to do so, then you must.

Some states require social security numbers on judgments in dissolution of marriage cases!

It's generally required 1) to prove you are you, and 2) to get copies of your medical records, assuming you're claiming physical injuries in your lawsuit.

Unless you are Bill Gates, I'm fairly confident the opposing lawyer isn't out to steal your identity.
