Strange Car Situation!!!?!

What is the name of your state? CA

I have a complicated situation I hope somebody can clear up for me:

About 1 year ago I took my old, trashy Camry from Utah and took it to
California for transportation. While driving to work one day, my
brakes died (yes, they actually died, like in the movies!), and I had
to frantically use the hand brake to avoid an accident. Fortunately, I
was able to slow down the car in a neighborhood near a park. I left my
car at that location for 2 days, so I could decide what to do with it.
I decided to donate it to one of those Save the Children Charities,
when I arrived there, my car was gone. I thought it might've been
stolen, but I called the police and they told me that you can't park a
car in the same location for over 48 hours. I called the towing
company they gave me, and the company gave me a ridiculous towing fee,
storage fee, etc... worth more than the car itself. Then I learned
that if you abandon your car, they will auction it off and that's the
end of the story, so I decided that this would be more practical; this
is where the story becomes strange...

I haven't heard from the Towing Company since and thought this
situation was finished. I was shocked when I recently received parking
tickets dated in February to July, at differenet locations in the Bay Area, whiched were mailed to my Utah address (where the car is registered). I guess this means that the towing company is taking the car out for joy rides, or they sold the car and didn't change the title and some random person is still driving a car that is registered undered my name (even though the registration is expired).

What should I do? I'm pretty sure this something illegal is occurring,
however I can't pinpoint it. Was it illegal for me to not pay my
towing and storage fees? Should I report it to the police, even though
they most likely will not do anything about it? Can I press charges
with a legitimate claim and without they towing company trying to charge $10,000 for storage fees?

Sorry for the long post, but I'm really confused with this predicament.
I'll greatly appreciate any comments/suggestions.

get a court date for all of those tickets. ask the towing company for proof that the car was picked up, you never claimed it, and that the car was sold. take that with you.

i don't know about california, but in illinois, non-moving violations can be contested via mail, too. i got out of a continous stream of parking tickets because there was no "no parking" sign, but the police officer that kept writing the ticket said there used to be one. all i did was take a picture of the whole street showing there was no "no parking" sign anywhere and included a copy of that picture with a letter.
