Teen w/Driver's Permit driving parent's unregistered/uninsured car

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon

My son is getting his learner's permit and lives with his father whose car is unregistered. Given other circumstances at Dad's, it's probably reasonable to assume the car is uninsured too.

I'm concerned what will happen to my son's DMV record if he's ever pulled over while driving his dad's car. Will it go on his record since he only has a permit, or will the entire burden be placed on his dad?

He will be held responsible. In most states his father can be charged also for allowing him to drive.

He should definitely not be allowed to drive a uninsured/unregistered vehicle. It's just a huge headache to handle the tickets, which could prevent you son from getting his senior license for a while, at the very least of possible predicaments.

Thank you

Thank you both. I told my son before I dropped him off at his dad's to make sure his dad's car was registered before he started practice driving. I don't want to assume that he realized the car tags have expired (I don't remember paying attention to those things when I was a teen.) At least he's informed now. Beyond that - I don't think there is anything I can do.
