While taking on the workload due to a co-worker's maternity leave. I sprained the ligaments in my index and middle finger. I have been suffering for 5 years and I am unable to type nor perform any repetitive movements using the injured hand.

I asked for help at work when the load became excessive and hours too long but was told that they union would not allow a temp to assist.

Do I have any legal rights?

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

I don't understand what happened exactly. You mentioned you have had the injury for 5 years? Or did you just get the injury? How is the maternity leave and the 5 years related?

Please explain a little more clearer and give the state in which you reside.
