I have been involved in a mild car accident about 18 months ago. I
was driving a rental car (and haven't purchased insurance). The damage was
very small - a scratch on the bumper of the rental car and a dent on the
bumper of the other car, and possibly damage to its rear light and door. A
police report has been filed, and my damage was paid in full to the rental
company (a sum of around $300).
Unfortunately, I had left the country on the day of the accident (I was
actually on my way to airport). My mail was being forwarded to relatives,
who forwarded me a letter from the insurance company of the other car
several months later, listing the damage, and repair that has been made, and
a bill for over $2000. The bill seemed completely over-blown and out of
proportion. No clear costs were listed and what was listed didn't make
sense. I tried contacting them on the phone but never got a decent answer.
As I was living abroad, and moving around a lot, this matter was of low
priority to me. I would still like to straighten this out and do the honest thing. I shouldn't have let this drag on for so long..
Can anyone help - I have three questions:
1. Is there a chance that any legal charges/something has been made against me, since I no longer receive any mail on this issue? How can I find out?
2. Is any chance to dispute their charges and try for a more fair settlement?
3. Is this something I would need a lawyer for?
I would greatly appreciate any advice on the matter -
